Wastes generated at UMES must be processed (collected, stored, transported, disposed of) safely, economically, and in compliance with relevant regulation. Wastes must be categorized into appropriate classes, so they may be processed in accordance with
federal and Maryland regulations.
The UMES Hazardous & Regulated Waste Management Manual outlines more detailed procedures
for the handling and disposal of controlled wastes in accordance with existing regulations.
No hazardous chemicals shall be placed in domestic waste containers (dumpsters, trash cans, etc.), evaporated in a fume hood, poured down drains, rinsed down sanitary sewers or in any other way released to the environment without consulting EHS. Improper
disposal of hazardous waste could result in a fine, imprisonment, or both.
