  • Requirements

    • Be enrolled at least half-time (except for Federal Pell Grant) in a program leading to a degree at The University of Maryland Eastern Shore. (Audits and cooperative education 00 hours do not count towards enrollment for financial aid purposes);

    • have completed Entrance Loan Counseling, if you are a first-time Federal Direct Stafford and/or Graduate PLUS Loan borrower;
    • accept your loans in MyUMES;

    • not be in default on any educational loan, nor owe any refund on a grant or loan at any institution.

    The Office of Student Financial Aid determines your eligibility for financial aid and the University Bursar (Student Accounts) Office is responsible for the disbursement of your financial aid (except Work-Study). The University Billing Office will apply your financial aid funds to your University “Term” Bill.

    In addition to showing tuition and fee charges, your term bill will show an estimate of your approved financial aid (except Work-Study) that is being credited to the contract charges (tuition and fees and on-campus housing and dining) on your term bill. If part of your aid includes scholarships and grants, they will be used before any loans to pay for contract charges (tuition and fees and on-campus housing and dining). Once financial aid funds have been authorized to disburse and disbursed, the University Bursar (Student Accounts) Office will refund any excess financial aid (any financial aid over and above what is used for contract charges on your bill) to the student/parent.

    Disbursement for entire student population is a process in which the Office of Student Financial Aid must authorize before the Bursar (Student Accounts) Office can disburse financial aid funds.  The Office of Student Financial Aid is required to review enrollment status for the entire student population (enrollment verification process) before disbursing state, federal, and institution aid. Authorization of disbursement of financial aid is scheduled each semester (i.e. Fall, Spring, Summer) and starts to commence the following week after the last day of the Add/Drop period for each particular semester.

    University Of Maryland Eastern Shore students are initially provided with an estimated Cost of Attendance (COA) based on full-time enrollment.  The Office of Student Financial Aid awards all aid initially on full-time status.   During add/drop period, students change enrollment status from full-time to part-time or part-time to full-time. It is therefore important to review enrollment status of students so that if any adjustment has to be made on awarded financial aid, this is completed before the aid is disbursed and credit balance issued to student. Enrollment verification is federal regulation and requirement before disbursement.

    *Note: Pharmacy and Physical Therapy students follow a different timeline for the disbursements and refunds.

    UMES has partnered with BankMobile Disbursements, a division of Customers Bank, to disburse all student refunds. View information on setting up BankMobile on the University Billing Office refunds web page.

    If part of your financial aid package includes loans, check your loan status on MyUMES to see if you need to accept your loans and/or complete a promissory note and/or entrance counseling. These must be completed before your loan funds will disburse. When in MyUMES, be sure you select the appropriate session (i.e., Spring 2018, Fall 2018).

    If you are receiving a privately-funded scholarship (i.e. Rotary Foundation, local hometown organization) review University Bursar (Student Accounts) Office information regarding payments.

    You are responsible for paying any miscellaneous charges that appear on your term bill. Miscellaneous charges are anything other than contract charges (tuition and fees and on-campus housing and dining).
